Political support and leadership
In a sustainable abortion ecosystem, governments prioritize SRHR, uphold human rights, and guarantee access to services. This petal underscores the importance of political leadership and advocacy at all levels—from government institutions to the health sector—alongside a strong and mobilized civil society committed to promoting and defending the rights of women and people with the capacity to gestate.
In 2024:
Spaces at the international level
We participated as panelists at the Beyond Borders conference in Washington, DC, an international event that brought together more than 120 participants, including 50 state legislators, sexual and reproductive rights advocates and experts from countries such as the United States, Kenya, Mexico and India. This space allowed for the strengthening of strategic alliances and the sharing of key knowledge on the advances and challenges in the promotion of sexual and reproductive rights at the global level.
2. In the framework of the 68th Session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW68), we actively participated in the ACTUEMOS program, a space for dialogue with Latin American feminist organizations, in which we committed to continue promoting the fight against gender-based violence. This meeting allowed us to reinforce our alliances with key actors such as the European Union and UN Women, and to strengthen strategies for advocacy and promotion of regulatory frameworks to eradicate violence against women.
3. We participated in the 57th session of the UN Commission on Population and Development, where we celebrated 30 years of the Cairo Conference Program of Action. At this event, we emphasized the importance of maintaining the struggle for abortion rights in a global context, particularly in the face of setbacks to reproductive rights in countries such as the United States. This space was fundamental to continue promoting social mobilization and synergy between different actors in the defense of access to safe abortion.
Spaces at regional level
4. We collaborated with Profamilia in the development of their abortion ecosystem diagnostics in seven territories in Colombia. This joint effort facilitated the definition of intervention plans aimed at guaranteeing the implementation of abortion services, with the commitment of various government institutions and representatives of civil society.
5. In Mexico, we made a presentation for the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS), during which we shared our experiences in the promotion of sexual and reproductive rights, especially focused on the "I Decide" line. This space allowed us to interact with more than 50 members of the operational, medical and administrative staff of the IMSS, contributing to their training on the importance of comprehensive reproductive health care and the decriminalization of abortion.
